The recording from the Vienna Opera, made on 29 January 1978, is one of the best performances of the genius opera. Stunning emotional intensity and brightness of the interpretation, the full commitment of the performers, especially the conductor, more than compensate for the natural minor flaws, as usual, present in the "live" recording. The staging and ornamentation are absolutely traditional in the best sense of the word.
Following the Mahler tradition, Bernstein performs the Leonore Overture No. 3 before the final movement.
