Tchaikowsky, Andr?: The Merchant of Venice
Richard Angas (Duke of Venice), Christopher Ainslie (Antonio), Charles Workman (Bassanio), Adrian Clarke (Salerio), Norman Patzke (Solanio), David Stout (Gratiano), Jason Bridges (Lorenzo), Adrian Erod (Shylock), Kathryn Lewek (Jessica), Magdalena Anna Hofmann (Portia), Verena Gunz (Nerissa), Hanna Herfurtner (A boy), Juliusz Kubiak (Prince of Aragon) & Elliot Lebogang Mohlamme (Prince of Morocco) Wiener Symphoniker, Erik Nielsen Composer Andr? Tchaikowsky first made his mark in Great Britain as a concert pianist. Despite his immense success, Tchaikowsky’s real passion was for composition. “The Merchant of Venice”, after William Shakespeare’s play of that name, was to remain his only opera.
The score is intricate and dark, with moments o brutality and lyricism, not to mention flashes of acerbic wit. It defies attribution to any one definite style of 20th-century compostion, intelligently drawing on Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky and Claude Debussy.
This is the World Premiere of this opera.
